Block Island Fishing Tournament: A Bigger Catch Awaits
The Block Island Inshore Fishing Tournament is excitingly expanding in 2025, introducing anglers to a broader fishing area and new species. This year, the tournament will run from July 26 to July 27, giving participants a chance to fish for nine species in waters south of Block Island, extending to the Rhode Island southern coastal beaches and up to fifteen miles offshore.
New Opportunities: Fishing for Nine Species
Participants can now vie for catches including bluefin tuna, mahi-mahi, yellowfin tuna, bonita, and false albacore, in addition to the traditional fluke, black sea bass, bluefish, and striped bass. Tournament Director Capt. Chris Willi expressed enthusiasm about these additions, noting how they were made in response to feedback from previous participants. The expansion aims to enhance the fishing experience for all anglers involved.
Innovative Technology Meets Tradition
This year's tournament will utilize the GotOne app, allowing anglers to participate without attending the after-party. By simply capturing a photo of their catch against a provided ruler, they can submit entries electronically. This not only adds convenience but also promotes conservation efforts, as the data collected will bolster recreational fishing statistics.
Empowering the Community
The tournament has structured its entry fees at $150 per boat (accommodating up to six anglers) and $35 for shore anglers, pledging 100% of these fees to support the Block Island Fire Department and Rescue. This is indicative of the event's commitment to giving back to the local community, further enriching the fishing culture on the island.
The Tournament Atmosphere: Catching More Than Just Fish
On July 27, an awards ceremony will take place at Capt. Nick’s Rock & Roll Bar, fostering community spirit amongst participants. Each angler can look forward to a fun gathering with opportunities to win tackle shop gift cards, bridging the passion for fishing with local camaraderie.
Join the excitement as the Block Island Inshore Fishing Tournament evolves. From the innovative use of technology to inclusive prize offerings and conservation efforts, the tournament promises an enriching experience for anglers of all skill levels.
