Honoring a Legacy: The Story of S&S Friendly Ranch
Located in San Diego’s South Bay region, S&S Friendly Ranch is much more than just a working ranch; it's a living testament to the rich history of Black entrepreneurship in the area. Established 45 years ago by Sim Wallace and Sarah Buncom, the ranch is now helmed by Sim’s granddaughter, Diamond Wallace-Brandon. Under her leadership, the ranch has transformed into a significant community hub, offering event spaces and agricultural education that harkens back to the values instilled by its founders.
Community Engagement for Lasting Impact
Diamond Wallace-Brandon emphasized the importance of community engagement during our discussion. "We partner with local organizations like the Pixca Farm to highlight the hard work of regional farmers and promote sustainable practices like regenerative agriculture. Our nonprofit, 'Servicing Every Soul,' educates local youth and families about growing food, animal care, and composting," she shares. This commitment not only reinforces the ranch's mission but also fosters a sense of belonging among community members.
A Unique San Diego Experience
Visitors to S&S Friendly Ranch have the opportunity to interact with a variety of farm animals at the ranch's petting zoo. "Everyone who comes to the ranch falls in love with our goats and animals. We encourage immersive experiences for all ages," Diamond explains. Additionally, those who venture to the ranch can enjoy nearby attractions, such as the Pixca farm stand and local eateries that reflect the vibrant culinary scene of Imperial Beach.
Connecting to Culture and Community
For Diamond, connecting with her heritage is vital. She frequently attends events hosted by organizations like Black San Diego and Soul Sunday, creating spaces where Black creativity can flourish. "These gatherings uplift the music and art scene in San Diego, reminding us of our cultural roots while providing a platform for expression." Supporting Black-owned businesses and fellow tourism accelerator members, such as The Mental Bar and Point Loma Tea, further strengthens her ties to the local community.
