The Old Globe's 'Globe for All' Tour: A Community Return to Theater
San Diego's theater enthusiasts have much to look forward to this fall as The Old Globe embarks on its highly anticipated annual "Globe for All" tour. This year, the tour will showcase a free production of Shakespeare's classic "Julius Caesar," set to enliven community spaces across San Diego and Tijuana.
Directed by the talented Marcela Lorca, the tour kicks off on October 28 at Wilson Middle School and will run for four weeks, culminating in a special show at The Old Globe's House of Charm on November 22. With a mission to bring theater to neighborhoods that traditionally lack access to the arts, this initiative promises a uniquely intimate performance experience.
A Legacy of Accessibility
Since its inception in 2014, the "Globe for All" tour has reached over 16,000 audience members, performing in diverse locations such as gymnasiums, shelters, and community centers. This outreach aims not only to entertain but also to foster connections between people and their local arts, making theater accessible to all.
A Star-Studded Cast and Creative Team
The cast for this year's production is impressive, featuring Mary Chieffo as Julius Caesar, Kevin Alicea-Minor as Mark Antony, and Erick Lindsey as Brutus. The creative team includes notable talents in set design, costume, and sound, ensuring a high-quality theatrical experience that captures the essence of Shakespeare's work.
Building Community Through Art
According to The Old Globe's Director of Arts Engagement, Adena Varner, the tour serves as a vital opportunity to connect with existing and new community partners. The goal is to create lasting memories for those attending their first live theater event.
As Patrick Meyer, a San Diego resident, expressed, “It's refreshing to see the arts come to life right in our community. The diverse venues make theater feel more personal and engaging.” This sentiment underscores the enduring value of art in community life.
Getting Involved
As the production nears, residents are encouraged to take note: seating will be first come, first served, ensuring a spontaneous and vibrant atmosphere. For those wishing to attend the final show in Balboa Park, tickets will be available for a nominal fee starting October 3.
This initiative exemplifies how the performing arts can bridge gaps and enhance community ties. Each performance promises to be more than just a show; it's an opportunity for San Diego residents to come together and celebrate the rich cultural tapestry of their city.
