A New Record in Freshwater Fishing
The waters of Connecticut have recently made headlines with the capture of a gigantic carp that has rewritten the state's freshwater fishing records. On June 21, 2025, Norbert “Norbie” Samok, an avid angler from Westchester County, NY, landed a remarkable 58.05-pound, 44.8-inch common carp from the pristine Lake Zoar, marking it as the largest freshwater fish ever recorded in Connecticut.
The Capture
Early in the morning, around 3 a.m., Samok prepared for an exciting fishing expedition in a remote, boat-only area of the lake. Using a specially flavored boilie bait, he hooked the behemoth. After a riveting struggle, which involved maneuvering through underwater obstacles, he successfully brought the carp aboard to be weighed and measured.
Record-Breaking Feats
This new record not only surpasses the previous Connecticut carp record of 45 pounds, 8 ounces caught just a few weeks earlier by Rafal Wlazlo in Lake Lillinonah, but also highlights a growing trend among anglers in the region. Wlazlo was present to congratulate Samok, echoing camaraderie within the fishing community that’s gaining momentum in the state.
Fishing Trends in Connecticut
In recent years, common carp have increasingly become popular among anglers, often overlooked in the past due to their reputation. Connecticut's Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) has embraced this shift, promoting catch-and-release fishing practices to preserve these large fish while allowing more anglers to experience the thrill of landing a trophy catch. With these two record-breaking fish being caught just weeks apart, it’s clear that Connecticut is emerging as a premier destination for serious carp fishing.
Why This Matters
Samok’s achievement is an important development. As carp fishing gains recognition, it opens up a new dimension in the angling community, attracting both seasoned fishermen and newcomers eager to take on the challenge of landing sizable fish. This enthusiasm for fishing not only supports local businesses related to fishing gear and services but also encourages more families to engage in outdoor activities together.
